Union Pacific's engine number 844 was the last steam engine built for that line by the American Locomotive Company, delivered in 1944. It pulled passenger cars until 1957, reaching speeds as high as 100mph. It's power output was about 4500 horsepower, so it was equally qualified for freight service, which it did from 1957 to 1959. In 1960, engine 844, along with a similar engine number 838, were saved from the scrap heap in the name of promotional excursions. 844 was restored and 838 was kept for spare parts, although supposedly it's running gear and boiler are in better shape than those on 844. You can still see the historic locomotive on the rails from time to time.
