Co-trimoxazole is a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole and is in a class of medications called sulfonamides.
It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Use to treat different types of bacterial infections
CO-TRIMOXAZOLE = SMX/TMP
Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, also known as co-trimoxazole among other Brand names
It consists of one part trimethoprim (TMP) to five parts sulfamethoxazole (SMX)
SMX:TMP = 5:1
SMX:TMP = 400mg/80mg
SMX:TMP = 800mg/160mg

Available as powder, suspension, tablets, injection
CO-TRIMOXAZOLE BASIC USE
Used in the treatment of different type of bacterial infections:
Lung infection
Infection of the airway tubes
Infection of the urinary tract
Ear infection
Infection of intestines
Travelers’ diarrhea
Impetigo (red sores on the face)
CO-TRIMOXAZOLE INDICATIONS
It is used for
urinary tract infections,
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin infections,
travelers' diarrhea,
respiratory tract infections
Cholera
pneumonia in people with HIV/AIDS
other causes of immunosuppression
CO-TRIMOXAZOLE MECHANISM
Folic acid is produced and used by bacteria to produce DNA & carry out the reproduction process.
Co-trimoxazole blocks and inhibits the production of folic acid by bacteria thereby preventing the multiplication of bacteria.
This results in stopping of the spread of infections by that bacteria.
CO-TRIMOXAZOLE SPECTRUM
Cotrimoxazole is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent
Antibacterial spectra of trimethoprim and sulfonamides overlap considerably.
Additional organisms covered by the combination are—
Salmonella typhi, Serratia, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Yersinia entero-colitica, Pneumocystis jiroveci
Other many sulfonamide-resistant strains of Staph. aureus, Strep. pyogenes, Shigella, enteropathogenic E. coli, H. influenzae, gonococci and meningococci
HOW TO TAKE CO-TRIMOXAZOLE?
Prescription based antibiotic drug
Take Co-trimoxazole as a whole with a glass of water. DON’T DO SELF MEDICATION AS IT IS AN ANTIBIOTIC
Co-trimoxazole is best taken with food.
Remember Do not to crush, chew or break this medicine while consuming it.
Suspension form take it in the exact amount as prescribed by doctor.

Nausea
Diarrhea
Skin rashes
Stomach disturbance
Decrease in WBCs
Low blood cell count
Mental depression
Unconsciousness
Loss of appetite
CO-TRIMOXAZOLE CONTRAINDICATIONS
DO NOT USE THE CO-TRIMOXAZOLE in these condition
If you are allergic to any component of Co-trimoxazole
If you have low blood platelet count
If you have an abnormal level of RBCs
If you have phenylketonuria
If you have liver or kidney disease
If you have pregnancy
If you have Serious hematological disorders
Should not be given to neonates during the first 6 weeks
DON’T CONFUSE WITH CLOTRIMAZOLE
Clotrimazole, sold under the brand name Lotrimin, among others, is an antifungal medication.
It is used to treat vaginal yeast infections, oral thrush, diaper rash, pityriasis versicolor, and types of ringworm including athlete's foot and jock itch.
