What Would YOU Do For A Free Shower & Bed?🚿🛌 WEIRD First Day In Corsica!

Day 211. 30km (81675kms 7yrs)

Significantly further north now, I’d wriggled into my second, warmer, sleeping bag during the night. Come morning the tent was covered in dew and several crickets.

There was no rush this morning, but I had reason to be excited; a Warm Showers host tonight offered the prospect of a shower, a bed, some laundry, maybe even a home cooked meal!.. But, it required a 500m climb over 11kms entirely off my route. It would be worth it. Ensuring everything was dry as I’d prearranged two nights with my host, I packed away on an east facing beach, far less sweatier than usual in the rising sun.

Initially flat I passed by lush green fields of sheep and cows. Only after an hour or so did I begin climbing, but at a pleasant and consistant 5% it was a breeze after some of those Sicily days. On the way a patisserie cafe advertised in their window free password-less wifi. Stopping in a quaint little village half way up I found a leafy plaza lined with restaurants, also with free municipal wifi, how nice!

I completed the climb without difficulty arriving about an hour before my host was projected to return from work. Three hours later I was still waiting, increasingly concerned in the garden of the small apartment complex. Most appeared to be unoccupied but when a couple emerged on their way somewhere, I enquired about their neighbour’s whereabouts. Well. It seems my host had been arrested that morning at 06:00!! Led away in handcuffs according to the mime I was given as my French wasn’t quite up to the job.

The neighbours granted me permission to camp in the garden before departing, so I set up the tent and took a quick dip in the pool. Dinner was the only things in my pannier; biscuits and wine which I glumly ate, mourning the bed and the shower and the laundry I would not be enjoying after all. What a bizarre start to my Corsica time!
