Front load laundry machines exclusively have pulsators and some manufacturers such as LG and Samsung are going for pulsators in top loads as well. The agitator is really good on getting out tough stains from heavy fabrics such as jeans. While, the pulsator is much gentler on clothing making it better for high end clothes or lighter fabrics. An agitator spins garments creating friction between them much like an old school washing board. The pulsator turns the water in the washing machine which interacts with the stains to get them out.
