Former India women’s captain and renowned broadcaster Anjum Chopra shared her candid thoughts on some of the hottest talking points in Indian cricket in an exclusive conversation.
On Shreyas Iyer’s Exclusion from Asia Cup 2025
When asked about Shreyas Iyer missing out from India’s Asia Cup squad despite consistent performances, Anjum said:
The positives you mentioned about Shreyas — his form in recent years and his IPL consistency — everyone has seen, even the selectors. Yet, despite that, he was not picked. That means they must have had strong reasons, as explained in the press conference. As players, it does feel bad, because Shreyas deserved to be in the squad, even in England. But as a cricketer, I’d say one should just keep giving their best. Ultimately, the decision-makers have multiple options, and we have to trust their judgment.”
On Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli’s ODI Future
Speculation around the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli before the 2027 World Cup has been growing. Addressing the rumours, Anjum remarked:
“Both of them have been away from cricket and media for a while, which is why people are missing them and such talks are happening. But the day they return to the ground and start performing, all these questions will end. They are such big players that the entire world watches when they bat. I don’t think it’s right for us to decide their future. Their performance will do the talking.”
On Comparing Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni as IPL Captains
When asked who stands taller as an IPL captain between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, Anjum refused to draw comparisons:
“You don’t compare captaincy and eras. Every phase of Indian cricket has had its own charm. In 1983, expectations were low but India won the World Cup; in 2011, people didn’t expect it but India lifted the trophy again; in 2023, nobody could believe when we lost; and in 2024, we won once more. So, you can’t compare eras or captains. We should simply feel fortunate that our country has produced such leaders, encourage them, and enjoy their journey.”
