Professor Zoltan Takats, from Imperial College London, has invented a surgical device that sniffs out cancer cells. The device, called the iKnife, can analyse the smoke that’s produced when heat cuts tissue, telling scientists the type of tissue that’s being cut. Takats and his team are developing the intelligent knife in the hope of making surgery more precise. He’s also co-leading a Cancer Research UK-supported trial, called the REI-EXCISE trial, that’s aiming to see if the iKnife can be used in breast cancer surgery.
