This is Sir Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Hut from his Discovery Expedition. The Hut was built in 1902 making it the second oldest building in Antarctica.

Experiencing what this hut is like in winter makes me appreciate how difficult it must have been for the early explorers to live through the extremely cold polar environment in a hut with minimal heating.

The hut has been conserved and is continually being monitored to ensure it remains in top condition. A considerable amount of work has gone into its preservation. Without this work, it is unlikely that I would be able to visit.

The hut is situation on Ross Island just near McMurdo Station and Scott Base and is an Antarctic Specially Protected Area- the highest heritage designation under the Antarctic Treaty System.
