Spelt sourdough crumpets are a perfect way to use any discarded starter. This homemade spelt sourdough recipe for crumpets takes the crumpet eating to another level. When the crumpets are eaten warm and straight from the pan, they will have a crunchy bottom. If not, warm them in the toaster to get a crunch again.
If you don't bake with spelt flour, you could swap it for whatever starter you have in the fridge. I haven't tested gluten-free ones yet. I have been using a white spelt flour starter for bread and pizza for over a year now. When I was last in Australia, my friend made sourdough crumpets once a week from her discarded starter. Thank you, Anna, for showing me how to make an easy crumpet recipe. We also noticed many of the local cafes around Melbourne had homemade crumpets on their menu.

What Are Crumpets? A crumpet is a small griddle-type bread made from a batter of flour milk and yeast. Traditionally crumpets are a popular breakfast or afternoon treat in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. Crumpets are small, round bread with a holey top and a spongy interior texture. As a young girl, we had crumpets with butter and honey. These were usually a winter treat and they were store-bought from the supermarket.
