Lesson Title: I Am a Child of God - Peter's words show us that we are living stones, temples of worship made to reflect God's wonder to the world!

Foundational Building Block

WHO?
Jesus’ close friend Peter wrote 1 Peter. Earlier in Peter’s life, Jesus changed Peter’s name from Simon, to Peter, perhaps because He knew who Peter would become. Peter means “rock,” and Jesus said of him, “on this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18).

WHAT?
1 Peter is written in the form of a letter to believers in the early days after Jesus left the earth. Letters were an important form of communication to speak to many people at once, and they are a gift to us as they provide records of early Church teachings.

WHERE?
It is believed that Peter was in Rome during these years of ministry. Rome was a huge region, and Peter refers to it as “Babylon,” a metaphor for the exile Christ-followers were experiencing throughout the Empire, under Nero’s reign.

WHEN?
1 Peter was written not too many years after Jesus’ ministry on earth was completed. The first century was a tumultuous time for the young Church, as persecution
of believers was rampant under Roman rule. Peter himself would be killed for his belief and faith in Jesus.

WHY?
The Church was under great attack, and Peter wrote this letter to encourage Christians in their faith. He reminded Jewish believers of texts from David and the prophet Isaiah (with which they would have been familiar) to strengthen them in belief.
