In this episode, Historian V Sriram is talking about the history of the Greater Chennai Corporation, formerly known as the Corporation of Madras and Corporation of Chennai. It is one of the oldest municipal corporations in India established on 29th September 1688. Do you know who was the first mayor of Chennai? It is Nathaniel Higginson who was nominated as the first mayor. He shares interesting and unknown facts about the Tradition of Mayor's Outfit, Unique features in Madras High court, Approach of Alderman and Burgess, and much more. In 1919, the Corporation was reorganized in many aspects. At the same time, a law came into effect that Indians can also become presidents (Mayors). He also discussed the list of mayors and their contributions. In 1972, there arose an internal complaint which eventually dissolved the corporation. In 1995 it came to an end and the corporation started again. There is a big story behind the Ripon building (the location of the corporation).
