This is one of the most fully fan-written episodes I've ever done. A good 95% of this script is the work of Claire Dixsaut, who notably already wrote my episode about the French outsider artist Augustin Lesage (   • He Said Spirits Were Moving His Paintbrush...  ) and is a generally superb writer. About this chaotic Egyptian tale, she has this to say:
"For this episode, the writer has searched books, contemporary and modern, as well as the letters of our main characters, their travel journals, and modern academic publications, in French, English and Italian. The British Museum and the Louvre were contacted.
But these sources, then as today, are contradictory, when not downright fantastic. Claiming to be telling the full and objective truth here would be laughable and misleading. Any attempt to compile all sources would make for a very long, tedious and confusing book, never mind an episode, with no guarantee of being any closer to the truth at the end of the day.
After months of hair-pulling and cursing the manes of long-gone adventurers, this writer decided to follow Belzoni’s step-by-step account, to fact-check it to death, and to moderate it with other sources whenever available. The result is a biased story, deliberately leaving aside Henry Salt’s personal excavations and Drovetti’s good deeds — surprisingly there were many of those.
While the pleasure you might derive from this story should entirely be credited to Tor, all errors and inaccuracies are my own."
