Can you find treasure with an ion detector? The answer is yes. Here's the theory. Ions exist in nature. They are related to radon, a type of radiation. Radon is a radioactive element of the uranium series that is found in rocks and soil, especially in granite and igneous rocks. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that slowly seeps into space and emits alpha rays as it decays in the air, ionizing the surrounding air molecules. As a result, the air in a cavity may contain relatively many ions from natural radiation. If the air in a cave or tunnel is stagnant, the radon concentration will be high, which means that the degree of ionization in the air is also likely to be high. Since radon is a gas, after it is generated, it moves between soil particles and comes out to the surface. If the soil is dense (clay-like and packed with particles/high moisture), the gaps (porosity) through which radon can pass are small, making it difficult for it to move. Conversely, low density (soil particles are coarse, porous, sandy and dry) allows radon to pass through and reach the surface. This means that the density of the soil in an artificially filled hole is lower than that of the surrounding soil. This increases the rate at which radon escapes to the surface, causing ionization in the atmosphere and making the ions detectable. This is the principle. Whether ion detectors are useful in treasure hunting has not been scientifically proven, however these theories may be useful in attempting to detect treasure burial sites or cavities. However, it is important to understand that buried treasure, gold, and cavities do not directly produce ions. The purpose of this ion detector is simply to detect ions, nothing more and nothing less.

A particular strain of gold-attacking bacteria thrives dark places without much oxygen like in the soil or rock crevices below the soil. These have been discovered as deep as 2 miles below the surface in gold mines, as well as near the surface of the ground.
