MacLellan’s Castle is in Kirkcudbright and stands on the site of the convent of Greyfriars in the centre of the town, on the south side of the River Dee which flows into the Solway Firth. Sir MacLellan of Bombie was an important man in the local community who held the position of Provost of Kirkcudbright between 1576 and 1597. He used the old convent as a source of stone to construct his new castle in about 1570. The “Laird’s Lug” is a secret spy hole behind the Great Hall fireplace where the laird could eavesdrop on his guests Suitable for Children and Family viewing
