Weeds come in many varieties and can be generally categorized as either broadleaf weeds or grassy weeds. Broadleaf weeds bear wide leaves with visible veins that branch out from a center vein, while grassy weeds are long and slender with veins that run parallel, and as we’ve mentioned, they look like grass. After identifying whether you have a broadleaf weed or grassy weed, you need to take further steps to identify which weed you have. This is important because herbicides that work on one type of weed may not work on another. To help identify different weeds, take a closer look at how the blades are shaped, whether or not the blades have hairs, how the stem is composed, if the grass has spiky tips, and the grass’s root system.

Check your lawn or garden beds for any unwanted patches of weeds. The easiest tells to look for are discolored patches of grass, or taller or shorter patches of grass. Weeds may grow where the lawn is stressed or where conditions are favorable for weed growth. You can find weeds where the soil is not watered properly, in patches of grass that experience a lot of heat stress, in patches of grass that see too little sun, and where the grass has thinned due to insects, disease, or foot traffic.

Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, especially when handling any chemicals. Keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry. For general grassy weed control, use a product like Quinclorac 75 DF or Fahrenheit Herbicide. Both of these are selective weed killers, meaning they’ll kill targeted weeds without harming the surrounding turf. However, both products can only be used over certain turf grasses. We recommend you use Quinclorac 75 DF over cool-season grasses like bluegrass, fescue, or ryegrass. This will damage warm-season grasses like St Augustine grass, Bahiagrass, and Centipede grass. Use Fahrenheit if you live in a region with warm-season grass. To keep weeds from growing back, you can use a pre-emergent herbicide like Barricade. When applied properly, Barricade will form a chemical barrier that will stop weeds from sprouting.

Past herbicide application, the best way to keep grassy weeds from growing in your lawn is to maintain lush, healthy turfgrass. Mow your grass properly and to the proper height. Water your lawn properly. It is always better to water the grass deeply once or twice a week rather than a little every day. Improve your soil’s drainage by regularly raking and dethatching the top layer of soil to allow more air circulation.
