In episode six of Focus On, we chat with Oscar McMahon, co-founder of the iconic Young Henrys brewery that is changing the Australian brewing game one schooner at a time.

In a time when greenwashing is rife, Young Henrys is truly committed to the cause, collaborating with UTS’s Climate Change Cluster to integrate microalgae bioreactors into the brewing process.

An unavoidably CO2-intensive process, creating just one six-pack of beer releases around 70g of CO2 into the atmosphere, an amount that would take a tree up to two days to convert into oxygen. Algae is approximately five times more effective at this process. So, with two glowing green tanks housing up to 20 trillion microalgae organisms on the factory floor, Young Henrys are at the forefront of a sustainable brewing revolution.

Perhaps the most exciting initiative the brewing world has seen yet, we discuss the game-changing applications of algae, both within and beyond the industry, on Young Henrys’ mission to “drink beer, save the world.”
