I set up my Auto-Haste/Alert/Initiative combo because I was expecting to get into two random battles on the way to Maliris. But just one works for me.

When I get to safety, I set everyone up for Maliris. When Zidane is equipped with a thief sword, his damage calculation changes. Both his Strength and Spirit factor into his damage, so they both become kind of interchangeable. So the Bandana (with 1 Spirit) will add to his damage the same as the Green Beret (with 1 Strength), plus the Bandana has evade. The N-Kai Armlet (with 2 Spirit) adds more to his damage than the Bone Wrist (1 Strength), plus it has a lot of evade. And the Black Belt (with 2 Strength and Spirit) will add quite a bit to his damage. I give everyone else the evading equipment they had for the end of disc 3, with Quina getting the Bandana and Gaia Gear. Also, everyone gets back Distract, trades Bird Killer for Devil Killer and gets Body Temp where they can.

Maliris is of little threat. It has no group attack. It will waste a turn casting Reflect, and half the time it will waste a turn casting Mustard Bomb since two of my characters have Body Temp. The only thing I need to make sure of is that someone has an active Auto-Life before I finish the battle, because with its last breath Maliris will use Raining Swords and KO the whole party.

Each of the Chaos Guardians holds a unique item that I need to steal. Maliris holds the Genji Armor. It also hold the Ultima Sword as its semi-common steal, which is easy to steal and decently strong, so I get that for Steiner. I wait for Maliris to make a move before using Steiner or Quina so that I don't make them self-KO with a uncast Mustard Bomb. The start of this battle had a few bumps, but one of the reasons I kept this battle is because Zidane stole the Masamune. I need a Masamune after getting the Excalibur II for Zidane to level up. The Masamune is rather expensive to make, so stealing the Masamune here will save me quite a bit of gil early on after getting the Excalibur II. Overall, the battle wasn't perfect but it was still very good.
