How to Find out the H-Index of an Author | Author-Level Metrics | Journal Publications & Citations

The h-index and the i10-index are author-level metrics with certain benefits as well as known limitations. Let’s see how to determine both.

Dr. Sophia, a young researcher, has received 19 citations for her first paper, 2 for her second and 70 for her third. By definition, the h-index is the highest “h,” such that the author has “h” papers, each with at least “h” citations. So, in this case, does Dr. Sophia have 1 paper with at least 1 citation? Yes. But we need the highest value of “h.” So let’s continue. Does she have 2 publications, each with at least 2 citations? Yes indeed. Does she have 3 papers, each with at least 3 citations? Not really, because her second publication has only 2 citations. So the highest attainable value of “h” in this case would be 2, thus implying that Dr. Sophia’s h-index is 2. Got it? Now, let me see if you can solve this exercise. I will give you 10 seconds to solve it. Yup, I guess you got it right. It’s “4.”

Note: Arrange your papers in the descending order of their citations to manually determine your h-index.

Tip: If you have plenty of publications, just sign up for a Google Scholar profile. Google Scholar will calculate your h-index and i10-index automatically for you. Nevertheless, it is always a good idea to have your profile ready on Google Scholar.
