This is a first grade phonics lessons that focuses on a spelling pattern of the long i vowel sound. In this case, it is the vowel team "ie".

Each section has a mini-lesson that acts as introduction to the concept; demonstrating the transition between words with short vowel sounds to those with long vowels sounds based on the spelling patterns. For the "ie" vowel team lesson, it uses a flashcards format, but incorporates rime substitution to demonstrate the vowel sound changes.

It is designed to provide students the opportunity to practice reading CVC (consonant-vowel- consonant) word fluently. It is also designed to further practice fluency by providing an opportunity for the student read words with similar spellings and recognizing how subtle changes effect not only word pronunciation, but meaning. All this aids in reading and writing development.

This scripted lesson can be led whole class at the carpet area or in small groups. Large Century Gothic font used for readability. This lesson also can be used at the kindergarten level, in a small group, to provide additional support for those students who are performing above grade level. It can be used at the second grade level for those who might need extra support reading words with vowel teams.
