In Vrije Geluiden Sessies 2020 we put Brader Mûsikî in the spotlight. This session was recorded in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. Brader Mûsikî (1958). He plays several songs from his new album ‘Herim Kuda’ (where should I go). Brader accompanies himself on the saz, his beloved instrument.
Brader Mûsikî comes from the village of Mûsika in Turkey. His love for music started at an early age. Mûsikî remembers: “My father made traditional Kurdish music. He sang to people at our house, usually in the winter nights. I always sat by his knee, sometimes until four in the morning. At one point I saw a recorder at a small mobile shop. I wanted it, but I had no money. Then I gave my shoes to him in exchange for the flute.”
Brader Mûsikî grew up as a Kurd in Turkey, and fled to the Netherlands in 1986. In 2005 he returned to his native soil as a celebrated musician, but had to spend 24 hours in a cell. He was released because he had Dutch nationality.
