Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican general and president, arrived in San Antonio de Béxar in early February 1836 with a large army during the Texas Revolution. His goal was to suppress the Texian rebellion and reassert Mexican authority over the region. Santa Anna’s arrival signaled the start of a campaign to crush Texian resistance, culminating in the siege of the Alamo, where his forces surrounded the Texian defenders in the mission-turned-fortress.
