Sri Lankans Vote to Elect New President Amid Election Law Violations | Sri Lanka Election

Sri Lanka's 17 million eligible voters are casting their ballots to choose their new President. The voters can choose up to three of the 38 presidential candidates. Whoever secures more than 50 per cent of the vote share will be declared the winner. In case, nobody passes this mark, there is a legal provision for a run-off election between the top two candidates. This is the South Asian island nation's first election since the 2022 economic crisis that triggered the ouster of brothers Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who were the Prime Minister and President at that time. The results are expected on Sunday. Reports of election law violations during the first few hours of voting have raised concerns in Sri Lanka.
