As you stick your legs under the kneeling thwart if you wrapped your canoe around an obstruction there is a chance the collapsing thwart could pin you in the boat, as could a seat, when used kneeling. That would be a very bad day. For extensive whitewater use a pedestal seat is much better. I do not go beyond Class 1 , so I am looking for comfort, and efficiency and for me this older technology is an acceptable risk.
