Brent with Western Heating+Air+Plumbing discusses frequent AC issues you can check yourself before calling in a technician. If the air flow coming from your AC unit is weaker than normal, it's usually because of a dirty filter or one that's become clogged. So the first thing to try is replacing the filters on schedule and ensuring the filter is the right size and type for your system. If the air coming from your AC is warm instead of cold, it could be leaking refrigerant. Changing the batteries may solve the issue. If not, our techs at Western would be happy to install a smart thermostat for you. Dirty coils can also cause problems. While it's possible to clean the coils yourself, a technician can help to be certain the coils aren't damaged in the process. And lastly, check the power source to the unit. If the breakers are tripping constantly, definitely call in a technician to check it out.

Hey. I'm Brent with Western Heating, Air, and Plumbing here with five common AC problems to check before we send a technician.
Have you noticed weak air flow coming out of your vents? This is a really common problem and can come from any number of things. Typically, it's from a clogged or dirty filter. It's important to change your filter regularly. If it's a 1-inch thick filter, that needs to be replaced every 1 to 3 months. If you have a thicker media filter, that needs to be replaced every 4 to 6 months. Selecting a proper replacement filter is critical. You don't want a filter that has too tight of pleat and is too restrictive. I like to use a solid cardboard framed filter with a metal mesh backing on the back side of the filter. It's also important that your pleats are not too tight. So a 1-inch gap between peak to peak on your pleats. And then make sure that the direction of air flow is pointed towards your furnace.
If you find that the temperature coming out of the vents is warm, that may be a bigger issue. That could be from leaking refrigerant. That is an issue that we may need to send a technician out to check. The system is a sealed loop system, and refrigerant should never leak out of it. If the problem persists, change the batteries. If that doesn't help, it may be time to upgrade to a smart thermostat or programmable, and we would be more than happy to help you install that.
Problem number four could be dirty coils. There are two sets of coils on your system; one indoor, one outdoor. The indoor coil may be a little bit hard to access and may require a technician to clean. The outdoor coil, while accessible, is more fragile. If you are going to try to clean this yourself, just be very careful not to damage the coils. You can use low water pressure with your thumb over the hose to lightly rinse it, or a very light brush. Along with that, make sure that the
area surrounding the outdoor unit is clear of any low-lying debris, mulch, or plants.
And our final tip for you is make sure that the power is on to both your indoor and outdoor unit. Check your breakers, check the switches near the units to make sure that they're on. If your breakers are tripping frequently, there's a bigger issue going on that you should probably call us out for.
We hope you found these tips helpful. All of these items are things we take care of in our routine maintenance visits. If you'd like to learn more, feel free to reach out to Western Heating+Air+Plumbing.
