Can Americans Go To Cuba? (FIRST HAND ACCOUNT)

Yes, Americans can go to Cuba, in 2023 at least.

The answer and process is much simpler than you may expect. I am American, and I entered Cuba from Mexico. This made my experience slightly easier.

I had googled the process for an American entering Cuba through Mexico, which was the process 30 years ago, the only way that Americans could visit the island because there were not any flights from the continental US to Havana.

There was not much info online about this process, unsurprisingly. This is the void I intend too fill.

To enter Mexico, for any nationality except for a few former Communist countries (think Russia and the former Yugoslavia's) here is the process: you show up to the airport from where you are flying to Havana (the only airport in Cuba to where international commercial flights arrive, unlike Guantanamo Bay).

Once you check in to your flight, which you must do at the airport, you will purchase a "tourist information card," which is essentially a visa to enter Cuba. It cost me $30 US from Mexico and I imagine its the same in Europe.

That's it. Tourist information card and you are good to go.

Flying from the US to Havana directly, the process is the same. However, the people I met in my stay in Cuba did the exact same thing that I did, but they paid $90 US. So it's just a little more expensive but totally doable.

As far as I know there are direct flights to Havana from New York, Boston, Miami, Washington DC, and Atlanta.

Once you arrive to Havana, at least when I did in March of 2023 from Merida, Mexico, you need to have already completed online something called a "tarjeta de ..." whatever, its complete bullshit. I had not done it because nobody told me and I didn't know about it. You can see the little table setup on the video. I showed the ladies my hostel info and they wrote it down, luckily I did not have to pay anything.

Make sure you have all of your accommodation info on your phone ready or printed out.
