For decades, Cuba sat in geopolitical limbo: sanctioned, isolated, economically strangled, but largely ignored by mainstream media. That changed on January 29, when Trump signed an executive order that radically escalates U.S. pressure on Havana.

On paper, this order targets Cuba.
In reality, it’s about something much bigger: power, control, and Washington’s attempt to reassert dominance in a world that no longer accepts U.S. unipolar rule.

For the first time, a U.S. presidential emergency order explicitly labels Russia a “hostile country” and “dangerous adversary” — not in Europe, not in Ukraine, but in the Caribbean. Cuba is framed as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security — language that unlocks sweeping emergency powers and allows the White House to bypass Congress entirely.

The order accuses Cuba of cooperating with Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah, and reads less like a sanctions memo and more like a threat assessment. Washington is openly repositioning Cuba as a forward operating platform for America’s strategic rivals, reviving Cold War logic for a multipolar era.

Trump’s move also introduces secondary sanctions on oil, targeting any country that supplies fuel to Cuba — a pressure tactic designed to force economic collapse without a formal blockade. We’ve seen this playbook before: Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Libya.

The human cost is massive.
Sanctions don’t just punish governments — they punish populations.
