Malta is a relatively cheap country when it comes to food shopping, prices of the restaurants can be high. To keep the expenses down, it is necessary to have accommodation that will allow you to cook a meal. If the hotel offers breakfast, then go for it.
Malta has a good selection of supermarkets with a wide choice of food. Most of the products are imported, with big ranges from Italy. Lidl is one of the cheapest supermarkets in Malta, Towers supermarket is also a chain and has some good offers, InterSpar has recently opened and is gaining popularity for both their good prices and range of products. Local shops are a bit more expensive than the supermarkets but convenient as there will always be one which is close by.
Local farmers markets are a way of saving money on seasonable vegetables and fruits.
While Malta can be more expensive compared to other Southern European destinations, at an average cost of €68-190 per person per day, you will find it stacks up well as a holiday destination and is less expensive than many Western European options.
Here is a breakdown of the most significant aspects of a travel budget, including costs for accommodation, transport, food, activities, and entertainment.
What surprised us on our visit to Malta was that the price difference between a mid-range restaurant and a far nicer establishment was minimal so we took advantage and had many phenomenal meals at very reasonable prices.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that portion sizes in Malta tend to be massive, so sharing a main dish is a fantastic way to cut costs while still enjoying a meal at a nice restaurant.
Depending on the location and quality of the restaurant, expect prices for a main meal to cost around €20-25. This means that you can have a decent meal for two people, including some wine and a shared starter for around €60-75.
If you plan to have one restaurant meal out and opt for home-cooked meals or cheap eats for other meals, budget around €30-50 per person per day on food.
The cost of food shopping depends on your tastes and how many people you’re feeding. For one person, eating a healthy, fresh diet including meat, vegetables, fish, and dairy, the cost would be around €100 per week. Of course, this figure could be lower or higher, depending on personal preferences how much you can afford to spend out of your living expenses.
Malta doesn’t have much farmland, so most of the food is imported. Even so, food prices are pretty affordable compared to some Western countries. Ferries arrive daily from Italy, transporting goods from all over Europe.
The best way to cut your food and grocery bill in Malta is to shop from local markets. Maltese farmers’ markets provide fresh food at highly affordable prices.
Love dining out? Going out to eat in Malta is more affordable than in North America, with a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costing you 25% less than it would in the US.
However, dining out in touristy areas may not help your pocket. For example, a dinner in a mid-range restaurant in Valletta might cost you the same or even more than in Los Angeles, New York, or other cities.

Overall, we found Malta to be an expensive holiday destination when compared with other European countries. Prices are similar to what we would expect to pay in the UK for accommodation and meals out.
Eating out in Malta is expensive. A meal in a restaurant can easily add up to €30+ for two people. However, you can expect a main course for around €12. It’s possible to get a salad box or sandwich for €5-8.
The most commonly found dishes in Maltese restaurants are cheese and meat platters, pizza, pasta and seafood. There are a lot of very good Italian restaurants in Malta, unsurprising as the island is so close to Sicily.
If you are travelling on a budget in Malta, I highly recommend eating the local pastries called pastizzi. They’re a traditional savoury filo pastry, usually stuffed with ricotta or mushy peas. They cost €0.50 each and they’re filling! You can find them in small bars, cafes or family-run pastizzeria.
