Phyllostachys nigra and aureocaulis. Easy to grow and quick to establish with dark green stems the first year which turn a lustrous black (p.nigra) or gold (p.aureocaulis) the following year. These varieties make a stunning feature in the garden or in a large patio container. Winter hardy.

Bamboo will tolerate almost any soil type, providing it does not
remain waterlogged for long periods. Though bamboo is seen growing in some tropical countries, many varieties are in fact perfectly hardy. Prolonged exposure to
sub-zero temperatures causes the soil to freeze progressively
deeper, which may eventually prevent the rhizomes from

Midhurst is situated in the Wealden Greensand, which lies between the South Downs and the Low Weald. The town is located in the Rother Valley: the River Rother flows east-south-east to join the River Arun near Pulborough, from which point the river flows southwards to reach the sea at Littlehampton. The name Midhurst is likely to relate to the area and to predate any nucleated settlement. The Old English form means the place in the middle of the hyrst (i.e. wooded hill) or the place among hyrsts. Evidently pre-Conquest in origin, the name is first recorded in 1185. There were two mills at Midhurst by 1284, to the south and north of the town.41 Although it has been suggested that both were much earlier in date,42 Savaric de Bohun's charter of 1219-20 specifically refers to the fact that there was only one mill at Midhurst, which was then granted to the chaplains of Easebourne, Clearly, this was the same mill from which an annual rent of one mark was granted to Waverley Abbey by Enjuger de Bohun and then by Savaric, respectively in 1200-18 and 1210-18.4.
