How Much Does it Cost Us to RV? Full Time RV Life Budget Talk

We often get asked the question, "How much does it cost to RV?" When we embarked on this lifestyle four years ago, we asked the same question. We were transitioning from two working people, to one retired, and then to both of us retired. In a span of two years, we went from two working incomes to two, much lower, retirement incomes. Was travel just a dream for us?

Our first step was to create a budget, a new budget with our newly retired incomes and what we thought we would require to travel and live full time in our motorhome. Simple enough. We did our research for the unknown expenses (campground fees, maintenance, fuel, ) and began tracking our known expenses, such as food, insurance, dog expenses, eating out, miscellaneous...) This was our budget and since there were so many unknowns, such as how much would it really cost us if we were to have a break down, we were militant in sticking to our budget. Many months, we would take from one category to make up an over expenditure in another category. After about one year, we saw that our budget was working. We still follow this budget, but now operate in the world of averages knowing that some places and/or times of year are simply going to cost more than others. In the end, the averages meet our travel budget. Our advice, follow the averages and be flexible. It saves so much anxiety in the long.
