In 1350 BCE, Pharaoh Akhenaten launched one of the boldest religious experiments in history.

He banned the worship of Egypt’s many gods, closed temples, and declared Aten, the sun disk, the only god to be worshipped. This radical change created social and economic upheaval, with thousands of priests losing their roles and trade disrupted.

After his death, Egypt worked to erase his memory — his city was abandoned, his monuments defaced, and his name removed from records. Today, Akhenaten remains one of history’s most controversial rulers.
