KNOXVILLE -- Sullivan South may not have shocked the world Friday night, but the top-ranked and defending state champion Fulton Falcons were shell-shocked nonetheless by the determined Rebels.

The juggernaut and supposedly invincible Falcons led by just two, 21-19, with just under six minutes left and the Rebels were marching. But Fulton forced a Rebel punt and scored on the next play to begin pulling way. The Falcons added two short scoring drives off Rebel turnovers in the final three minutes for the deceiving 41-19 victory.

Evan as misleading as the final score indicates, it’s still a far cry from the aggregate 63-5 margin compiled by Fulton in 11 consecutive mercy-rule thrashings to start the season.

South, in fact, led twice in the contest, the only two times the Falcons have trailed all season.

Junior quarterback Dylan Wieger staked the Rebels to a 7-0 first quarter lead with a five-run run that capped an eight-play, 85-yard drive. Wieger finished another eight-play march, this time for 81 yards, with a three-yard run for 13-7 second quarter Rebel advantage.

And Wieger added a third touchdown run from one-yard out late in the third, but couldn’t find an open receiver on the ensuing two-point conversion leaving the Rebels trailing by two heading in the fourth.

After forcing a Falcon punt, South began moving for what could have been the go-ahead score before the Fulton defense that had allowed just 57 points all season and just 29 to instate competition rose to the occasion for a third-down stop.

Things then unraveled quickly for the Rebels. Fulton quarterback Penny Smith hit future Division I wide receiver Xavier Hawkins on a slant that the 4.4 speedster took 67 yards to the house and a 28-19 lead.

After a South turnover, Fulton quickly navigated the short field for another score, this time a 13-yard Smith strike to Kenny Marsh for a 34-19 advantage.

With time winding down and the Rebels in desperation mode, Fulton forced another takeway with just under two minutes left. Instead of running out the clock, Fulton threw once to the end zone and then scored two plays later on a De’Ontay Tate 17-yard run to extend their streak of scoring 40 or more in every game this season.

Wieger finished 13-of-27 passing for 174 yards and added 121 yards and the three scores on 31 carries on the ground. Josh Booker hauled in six passes for 61 yards and Tommy Morris two for 45, but leading receiver Evan Headrick was limited to just two receptions for 16 yards.

Smith was good on 10-of-14 attempts for Fulton for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Hawkins had six catches for 126 yards and two scores.

Fulton star running back Daryl Rollins-Davis carried 13 yards for just 74 yards, but did score twice, before leaving early in the fourth quarter with an injury.

South’s defense was paced by Jake Strickler who made eight tackles. Kyle Bond and Hunter Haren had seven takedowns each. Playing perhaps his finest game as a Rebel, Morris had seven tackles and sacked Smith once.

South sees its season end at 10-2 while Fulton [12-0] will move to next week’s Class 4A quarterfinals and will host Greeneville.
