“Aa driver, especially coming up in that age where guys were dying literally, you know, probably every month, to live through those days of auto racing. And he he was intense. I mean, he you just know, everyone knows with A.J., that's that's why he was so successful. He just it was win or, you know, second place was was a loss. So, yeah, no, I mean, he's definitely mellowed out a bit as he's gotten older and the world's changed. And that's something that's unbelievable how much he's changed through time as well.”

STORYLINE:
A.J. Foyt has defied death more times than any one can count.

From killer bees and capsized boats to triple bypass surgery and terrifying racing accidents, the first four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 has made it to 88 years old with an irreverent view about death.

But then his wife of 68 years died suddenly last month and Foyt is now facing his own mortality.

The Associated Press recently spent a day with Foyt at his race shop in Waller, reminiscing about a career that made him famous far beyond the track.

He plans to be back for this year's Indianapolis 500, the race that made him a household name.
