Alex Stoddard (@alex_stoddards), a junior at Oaks Christian School in California, had 13 saves, including a block on a 5-meter penalty shot taken by Valery Verdugo late in the second quarter to lift the fourth-seeded Lions to a 7-5 victory against No. 3 Newport Harbor High in California in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division girls water polo final at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Stoddard, a Canadian athlete, helped hold Newport Harbor scoreless for 12:50 during a stretch from the first to third quarters. Stoddard also blocked a pair of 5-meter penalty shots taken Feb. 18 by Kirra Pantaleon in a 12-11 overtime victory against top-seeded Mater Dei High of California. Oaks Christian became the first team in any sport in school history to win an Open Division title. The Lions also became the first water polo program, regardless of gender, from outside Orange County to capture an Open Division championship.
