On January 2, 2022 at 2027 hours Newark Fire Department units were dispatched to 305 Buckingham Street for a report of a house fire. While responding the dispatcher advised that there might be somebody still inside the home.

Upon arriving on location I could see smoke from the second floor windows. Bystanders reported that someone was inside the home and refusing to come out. That threw up a red flag for me. I requested the working fire assignment to be started and exited the car to conduct a 360. The use of the thermal imaging camera helped me identify the location and extent of the fire. There was nothing else remarkable on the 360. The occupant did exit the structure and reported that no other people were inside.

Rescue-1 arrived with a crew of three and was assigned to attack the fire that was on the Division-2 of the home. Upon attempting to make entry via the front door the officer on Rescue-1 encountered numerous items barricading the front door. Again, that threw up a red flag. The stretch to the second floor was somewhat difficult as the step going to the second floor was at the rear of the first floor. The officer reported high heat and zero visibility in the hallway of the second floor. When Ladder-1 arrived they were assigned to stretch a back-up line behind Rescue-1.

As more units arrived on scene I assigned them to various tasks. Medic-5 then reported that they had discovered a second fire in the rear of the house on Division-1. Once again, that threw up another red flag. Having more than one fire, made me suspicious that we were possibly dealing with an intentionally set fire. This is not the first time that we have encountered a fire with multiple set points. (See the video from May 4, 2020 at 32 N. Buena Vista St.) I immediately ordered additional hoselines to the area of the second fire to ensure that the crews on the second floor did not become trapped.

The following equipment was on the initial assignment:
Battalion-1 with a crew of 1 (Me)
Rescue-1 (engine/rescue) with a crew of 3
Tower-1 (105 ft platform) with a crew of 2
Ladder-2 (75 ft quint) with a crew of 3
Ladder-3 (100 ft ladder) with a crew of 3
Medic-3 with a crew of 2
Engine-5 with a crew of 3
Medic-5 with a crew of 2

The working fire announcement brought an additional engine.
Engine-541 with a crew of 2

I also requested mutual-aid from Madison Twp. F.D. for a station fill-in.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries at this fire.
