While the Soweto uprising of 1976 is widely regarded as a seminal moment towards the eventual fall of the Apartheid regime, the jury is out on whether the current protest movement in the United States will lead to systemic change in that country. That's the view of a South African born US-based analyst who sought to draw similarities and clear distinctions between the two events. In a conversation with the SABC's Sherwin Bryce-Pease, Professor Sean Jacobs also believes that while the 1976 uprising led to the internationalisation of the struggle for freedom in South Africa, Americans, by and large, remain tone-deaf to what the international community thinks about their domestic strife.
