1990 Breeders' Cup Classic - Unbridled

The Classic outcome addressed two major points of controversy this week: the importance of post position and the worthiness of Ibn Bey to run in the Classic.

Unbridled broke from post 14, which many analysts and trainers had said would severely compromise his chances. The Classic began on Belmont's clubhouse turn, which supposedly put horses with outside posts at a great disadvantage.

Unbridled trailed early, but worked his way through the field and was clearly best. Under a fine ride by Pat Day, in the final yards he slipped in between Thirty Six Red and Ibn Bey, who had never raced on the dirt before and was considered a marathon turf specialist. Ibn Bey finished second and Thirty Six Red held on a length back in third in a field of 14, a nose in front of Lively One. Rhythm flattened out after a strong middle move as the 5-2 favorite.

Unbridled, coupled in the betting with Home at Last as a Carl Nafzger-trained entry, paid $15.20 for $2 to win and ran the mile and a quarter in 2:02.36. The 3-year-old Fappiano colt, owned by Mrs. Frances A. Genter, has won 6 of 17 career starts and earned $3,892,695.
