Our ultimate destination is the fabled Font's Point, a vantage point that offers an unmatched view of the badlands. A 4-mile drive on Sandy Dusty Road in the park leads us to this iconic spot. The park's name, 'Anza-Borrego ', is a testament to its rich heritage. 'Anza' is derived from Juan Bautista de Anza, a Spanish explorer who traversed this area in the 18th century. 'Borrego', the Spanish word for bighorn sheep, pays homage to these resilient creatures that have inhabited these mountains for millennia and continue to do so today.

Our destination, Font's Point, is a place steeped in history. It is named after Father Pedro Font, a Franciscan priest who accompanied Juan Bautista de Anza on his second expedition to Alta California in 1775-1776. As the expedition's chaplain and diarist, Font's detailed records provide us with a fascinating glimpse into the region's past. His accounts, spanning over two centuries, offer invaluable insights into the area’s landscape, flora, and fauna as they were.

The human history of this area extends far beyond European exploration. Native American tribes, including the Kumeyaay, Cahuilla, and Cupeño, have called this desert home for thousands of years.
