We’re in Osaka, Japan, and we just visited the World Expo 2025—an event that only happens once every five years, with countries from all over the globe coming together to showcase the future.
From the moment we stepped off the brand-new Yumeshima metro station (built just for the Expo), we were blown away by how massive and exciting the site was. Signs across the city made it easy to navigate, and the energy from the crowds was contagious. People were lined up for their 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. pavilion reservations more than an hour early, and security was smooth and organized.
Inside, we were greeted by the Grand Ring, a massive wooden structure that loops around the entire Expo. We didn’t expect to be able to walk along the top—but we did, and the views were stunning. We saw dozens of pavilions from all over the world—Korea, Germany, Romania, Kuwait, Thailand, Malaysia, Türkiye, and even smaller nations like Tuvalu. Some pavilions were grand, some simple, and others served food or featured interactive exhibits.
We had reserved time slots for a few of the more popular pavilions. At the NTT Pavilion, focused on telecommunications, we had our bodies scanned and saw ourselves animated in a hilarious dance scene. There was also a futuristic 3D performance by Japanese pop group Perfume, tying in the history of the past Expo in Osaka—the one in 1970. It was a surreal blend of culture and tech.
Later, we entered the Blue Ocean Dome, where an artistic display of ocean life and pollution played on a huge dome-shaped screen. The visuals were mesmerizing and emphasized environmental awareness, especially about plastic waste in our oceans.
We also made it into the Japan Pavilion, one of the most coveted experiences at the Expo—and it did not disappoint. It featured cutting-edge technologies using algae and biomass. There were real algae-based systems turning Expo waste into bioplastics and energy. The architecture itself was modular and sustainable, designed to be dismantled and reused. There was even a Hello Kitty-themed explanation of algae and microorganisms!
A definite highlight? Touching a real Mars meteorite.
10 Tips if you’re planning to go:
1. Reserve your top pavilions early online and as soon as you get into the park. After entrance, you have more options.
2. Don’t hesitate to explore the smaller pavilions—many hidden surprises there. In the several commons areas are a lot of smaller pavilions all under one roof.
3. Be ready to walk—a lot. The Expo is huge, and it really feels like a theme park.
4. Bring snacks and water bottles to save money (we brought our own rice balls). You can fill up water bottles for free inside. The health pavilion has quality food that is affordable and hidden away so there are no lines over there.
5. Lines to enter the Expo can get long, but keep walking because the security lines farther down move faster!
6. Use mobile data and don’t rely on wifi. Purchase an e-sim or physical SIM card for data in advance.
7. There is so much to see that it can feel like you’re missing out (FOMO). Just stay calm, smile, and enjoy each moment.
8. Enjoy the fancy Japanese toilets! If you are waiting in line, go somewhere else, there are so many nice bathrooms.
9. Some pavilions have cultural shows outside of the pavilions for the general public (Thailand, Malaysia, Türkiye, etc.) Check signage outside the pavilion for times of dancing, music, photo opportunities, etc.
10. There is a special flavor of Pepsi available at the EXPO. This type of thing is common at the EXPO so enjoy the one of a kind experiences.
