“Guys, I’m good.”That was the initial video message from Maksim Chmerkovskiy after the celebrity dancer and TV personality spent several days in Kyiv bomb shelters during the Russian invasion. But he posted the video with another message:“I’m in Warsaw. I’m in hotel. I’m not ok.”After staying awake for 36 hours, including about 23 hours spent on a train from Ukraine to Poland, the Ukrainian American “Dancing with the Stars” champion addressed his 1.1 million followers on Instagram, where he’s been posting regular updates all through the alarming conflict.“I’m scared, I’m confused, I’m terrified,” he said in the video. “I’ve just lived through some sh-t that I’m gonna need a lot of therapy for.”Chmerkovskiy, 42, who lives in Malibu, California and co-owns the Dance with Me dance studios in Glen Rock and Fort Lee — a place he has called home — recorded the video at about 9 p.m. Poland time from the safety of the hotel in Warsaw. He said he felt guilty for taking up space on the crowded train but thanked friends for helping and arranging to pick him up after he made the trip from Kyiv.“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the support I saw along the way,” he said, praising the actions of Polish people. But he kept his focus on those who remain in Ukraine.“The war’s just heating up,” he said. “I keep seeing reports and they’re going to get worse.”Chmerkovskiy said it was important to share images from the war, no matter how grisly.“It has to come out,” he said. “We’ve become so sterile with the way we accept news. ‘Oh, that’s too graphic. Oh, I can’t believe they showed that on TV.’ Well, I can’t believe you see that on the street. I can’t believe that people walking by today, a couple hours ago, got hit by a rocket and it’s incinerated the entire family. A mom, dad and two kids. I have that video and I have that image in my head as something that also happened. It is so close and it is so real.”Chmerkovskiy has a 5-year-old son, Shai, with his wife, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” alum Peta Murgatroyd, who just a few days ago was asking people to pray for her husband’s safe return. In his social media posts, Chmerkovskiy has been rallying against Russian disinformation while sharing scenes from across the country of the destruction and devastation caused by the invasion. He has called Russia’s approach a “fundamentally flawed way of governing humans by using propaganda (lies) and fear ... Been there, done that ... emigrated.”Video contains minor profanityChmerkovskiy was born in Odessa, Ukraine and came to New York in 1994 with his family, including his brother, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” champion Valentin Chmerkovskiy. He said that watching Russian forces fight Ukraine, he felt like he was in high school in Brooklyn again, watching “a little kid get beat up by a big kid.”“All of us are passing by, we think it’s wrong but we can’t just jump in, and that’s the reality of life. And that’s how it happens because we’re also terrified of the big kid.
