A chef has attempted to turn a potato into a $100 gourmet dish – but TikTok viewers weren't impressed.
Content creator Danny Kim, 26, from Maryland US, recently challenged Korean chef Jae Lee to turn a “measly” potato into a pricey bite.
Challenging the chef, Danny humorously hands over some potatoes, which all have had faces drawn onto them with a marker.
In an eager attempt to win the challenge, Jae Lee begins transforming the potatoes into a gourmet dish.
Jae starts by peeling and boiling the potato before moving on to the honey butter sauce.
He combines two whole blocks of butter with honey and sugar in a pan and leaves to cook.
To create the seasoning, Jae grabs seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar and salt and mixes it all up – stopping to taste the mixture.
Once the potatoes are boiled, he then grates them into a bowl and adds flour, salt and truffle oil.
He then forms the potato mixture into dorm shapes to create the "tater tots" look.
After they have been fried, Jae covers the potatoes with the honey butter he prepared earlier and finishes them with the seaweed seasoning and truffle.
"That’s a $100 bite," Jae says after trying his concoction.
Jae's fancy potato tots caused a storm on TikTok, with the post racking up 1.4 million views and 143,700 likes.
However, many were left questioning the price of the dish.
"Cool video but ain't paying 100$ for hashbrowns." wrote one user. [sic]
Another person added: "Looks nice but it is more far away from a 100 dollar bite than a fiat from a ferrari." [sic]
A third viewer commented: "I'd pay 30 bucks for tops..."
"That's not even a 100 cent bite," added another TikTok user.
Someone else wrote: "The truffle looked like dead skin."
Again referring to the chefs attempt at creating a $100 dish, another social media user said: "No you didn't u just wasted my time & I'm a professional chef." [sic]
Meanwhile, other viewers were more impressed by the outcome.
One user commented: “I’m convinced that would be the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. Amazing video.”
“It looks so good feel like yo sushi should have this,” another user said.
Someone else added: “Now that actually looks good.”
