Franz von Suppé or Francesco Suppé Demelli (18 April 1819 – 21 May 1895) was an Austrian composer of light operas from the Kingdom of Dalmatia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now part of Croatia). A composer and conductor of the Romantic period, he is notable for his four dozen operettas.

Overture Ein Morgen, ein Mittag und ein Abend in Wien (1843-44)

A morning, an afternoon, an evening in Vienna is a so-called "local painting" (one of many characteristic names for plays of the Old Viennese Volkstheater). The text was written by Franz Xaver Told, and the premiere took place on 26 February 1844 at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. Franz von Suppè wrote only the overture for it.

Just four years after his first permanent position at the Theater in der Josefstadt, Suppè succeeded in creating his first small masterpiece. And here a peculiarity of his came to light, for which he was often criticized, namely, always striving for higher things, to write music that was far too demanding for even the greatest trivialities. And the piece Ein Morgen, ein Mittag, ein Abend in Wien, a so-called local painting from everyday life in Vienna, was, contrary to its expectant title, a series of such trivialities, which failed despite being enriched with "gymnastic art productions" by English artists. However, Suppè only had to write the overture to this piece, which was cancelled after three days, but it was to become the first of his great symphonic overtures and which has remained in the repertoire of the concert halls to this day.
