Vietnamese Hostel Manager Arrested Following Methanol Poisoning That Killed Six Tourists in Laos

A tragic incident involving the deaths of six foreign tourists in Vang Vieng, Laos, has brought international attention to the dangers of methanol poisoning in locally brewed alcohol. According to The Telegraph, all the victims were connected to the Nana Backpacker Hostel, and the hostel’s Vietnamese manager has been arrested.

Deadly Poisoning in Vang Vieng
The lively nightlife of Vang Vieng, often filled with young backpackers enjoying rice-based Lao whiskey at bars, has come to an eerie standstill. On November 23, the bustling streets and vibrant parties gave way to grief and caution after six tourists died over the course of two weeks due to suspected methanol poisoning.

Bars catering to backpackers in the area have since stopped serving hard liquor, as reported by The Telegraph.

Aron Stephen, an Australian tourist sipping on a mango smoothie in central Vang Vieng, commented, “We’re not too scared, but we haven’t found any alcohol in the past few nights. It seems like nobody’s serving it anymore.”

Victims of the Tragedy
Among the deceased were Holly Bowles, 19, and her best friend Bianca Jones, as well as two Danish nationals, 57-year-old American James Hutson, and Simone White, a 28-year-old British lawyer.

At least 12 other individuals from the U.K., U.S., and New Zealand were hospitalized with severe symptoms of methanol poisoning. All victims had been staying at Nana Backpacker Hostel, with reports linking the deaths to drinks served at the hostel and a nearby bar, Jaidee Bar.

On November 12, several tourists were seen returning from Jaidee Bar to Nana Backpacker Hostel. The following morning, some were found unconscious in their rooms. Ten days later, the Lao government confirmed that drinks served at the hostel contained methanol.
