Red Dead Redemption follows John Marston, a former outlaw trying to leave his violent past behind and live a quiet life with his wife Abigail and son Jack. The story begins when the American government forces him back into the criminal world. Federal agents Edgar Ross and Archer Fordham kidnap John’s family and threaten to kill them unless he helps bring down the members of his old gang, the Van der Linde gang. John agrees because he has no choice. He travels to the town of Armadillo in New Austin and starts hunting his former partners. The first target is Bill Williamson, who has taken over a fort with his men. John tries to reason with Bill and convince him to surrender, but Bill shoots him and leaves him for dead. A rancher named Bonnie MacFarlane saves John and nurses him back to health. With her help, and with the help of the local marshal Leigh Johnson, John slowly builds resources and recruits allies to attack Williamson’s fort. But when they finally raid the fort, Bill escapes across the border into Mexico.
John crosses into Mexico, entering a civil war between Colonel Allende’s corrupt army and the rebels led by Abraham Reyes. Both sides use John for their own purposes, promising to help him find Bill. John does missions for Allende and then for Reyes, realizing both sides are manipulative, but he keeps working because Bill is constantly moving. Eventually John learns that Bill is hiding with Javier Escuella, another old gang member. John captures Javier first, turning him over to the U.S. agents, and then leads an assault with the rebels against Allende’s forces. During the final battles, he corners Bill Williamson, who is killed in the chaos. Reyes overthrows Allende and becomes the new leader, but John realizes Mexico’s problems aren’t solved and leaves for America, believing his mission is finally over.
But when John returns, Ross and Fordham reveal they will not release his family until he brings in the last and most important target: Dutch van der Linde, John’s former mentor and the leader of the gang. Dutch is now leading a violent new gang made up of Native Americans who are angry at the government for stealing their land. John works with government troops to fight Dutch’s gang, slowly hunting Dutch through forests, mountains, and hideouts. John hates working for the government, but he knows he must do it to get his family back. Eventually John and the army corner Dutch at his final cliffside hideout. Dutch gives a speech about how the world is changing and how neither he nor John has a place in it anymore. Then Dutch steps backward off the cliff and kills himself rather than be captured.
John has completed everything the government asked. Ross finally releases Abigail and Jack, and the family reunites at their ranch. John tries to rebuild his life, teaching Jack how to farm and how to live honestly. For a short time, things seem peaceful. But Ross betrays him. The government never intended to let someone like John live freely. One morning, the U.S. Army and Bureau of Investigation surround the ranch with dozens of soldiers. John realizes he cannot save himself but he can save his family. He sends Abigail and Jack away on horseback, telling them to ride to safety, and then walks out of the barn into a wall of guns. John is shot dozens of times and dies standing, sacrificing himself to protect his family.
Three years later, his son Jack tracks down Edgar Ross, who has retired. Jack confronts Ross at a riverbank and kills him in a duel, avenging his father but falling into the same cycle of violence John tried to end. The story closes with Jack walking away, leaving the fate of his own future dark and uncertain, showing how redemption came too late for John Marston and perhaps may never come for his son.
