A lovely, early winter morning seemed like the perfect time for me to get some drone time in and explore a local historic site I had not visited before. Warbstow Bury Iron Age Hillfort is reputed to be the second largest and best preserved site of its kind in Cornwall. At an elevation of just over 800ft (giving it a commanding view of the surrounding countryside) the site occupies approximately nineteen acres and consists of a pair of what would once have been formidably high, defensive circular ramparts and very deep ditches. Evidence of a third (central) ditch and rampart can be seen between the inner and outer rings, but I don't know whether this was never completed, or completed and later partially destroyed. The fort is believed to have been constructed some 2500 years ago and was apparently abandoned as a defended community some time around the first or second century AD. Archaeological excavations previously conducted at the site confirmed the existence of dwellings and a granary within its confines.
