This is a deep meditative piece from the French organist | composer Paul Allix (1888–1974). Born in Paris, Paul Allix studied music at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles being himself blind. He worked the organ and music composition with Adolphe Marty and the piano with Maurice Blazy (1873–1933).[1] In 1909 he was appointed organist of the great organ of the Basilique Sainte-Trinité de Cherbourg [fr] where he invited several organists, including André Marchal in 1919. There he taught the piano. Paul Allix composed several pieces for piano, religious motets and some organ pieces. This is one of his organ pieces.

This reed organ was made by Mason & Hamlin Organ Co. in Boston, Massachusetts, around 1880-1885. It is a portable reed organ, model 109 with a single manual, with a compass of F - g2, and two pedals. This instrument was sold by Mason & Hamlin as a "Baby" organ and was often used in children rooms and on river boats and yacht’s. It works, unlike French harmoniums, with suction and not with pressure. The effect is that the sound is softer and warmer, rounder. A lot of romantic organ composers, both American and in Europe especially in France have written pieces for reed organ and/of harmonium. Even the big names like Guilmant, Franck and Gigout. So it will be fun to discover those pieces on an authentic historical instrument.
