History of Russian Jack Park.

Russian Jack Park is named after Jacob Marunenko, a Russian immigrant who arrived in 1915 and settled at the park's location in the early 1930s. He became known as Jake Marchin or “Russian Jack”. During World War II, the military needed expansion areas. The farm reverted to the federal government. Later, in 1948, it was deeded to the city with the intention of turning it into a park. In the meantime, the greenhouse and golf course area became a minimum security prison farm for the APD that housed inmates who committed minor alcohol-related offenses. The “Prison Farm” was known for its vegetables, especially cabbage and potatoes, which were grown there until the early 1960s. It was also the city's source of water in case of emergency. With the growing demand for recreation, the prison farm was moved in 1968 and is now known as the Clithrow Center. Today, Russian Jack Park is a jewel of the city center, offering quiet nooks and crannies in the midst of the busy downtown year-round. In summer, it offers a golf course and trails, and in winter the park becomes a favorite hill for sledding and cross-country skiing. If you're tired of snow, visit the greenhouse at the entrance to the park. The greenhouse grows all the flowers that bring color to downtown and the entire city during the summer.
