The Steindamm is an important main street in the Hamburg district of St. Georg.

In 1539, Steindamm was the first paved street to be laid outside the Hamburg city walls. It connected the stone gate of the Hamburg ramparts with the Lübeck gate in the fortifications of the suburb of St. Georg. As part of the connection between the cities of Hamburg and Lübeck (later Bundesstrasse 75), it was the city's busiest street.

After the so-called Wilhelminian era around 1880 to 1890, St. Georg was consistently populated with four-story tenement houses. The Steindamm developed into a main shopping street, which was also important beyond the district. At the beginning of the 20th century, seven tram lines ran through it (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 20).

The section between Steintorplatz and Stralsunder Straße is still lined with four-story houses today. This part of the street has been traffic-calmed since the tram was shut down in 1960. In 1960 this part of the Steindamm still had a “bourgeois” character, the expansion of the entertainment business in the St. Georg district initially took place discreetly. Since the mid-1970s there have been citizens' initiatives to revalue St. Georg's place of residence and thus also the Steindamm and to assert this against one-sided use as an amusement mile.

The Hansatheater am Steindamm 2012
The area at the Steindamm is today on the one hand strongly Turkish-Muslim. Numerous Turkish and Oriental restaurants, shops and mosques are located on and around the stone dam. On the other hand, the area between the main train station and Stralsunder Straße is also characterized by sex shops and prostitution. However, these should gradually be suppressed. The Steindamm gained national fame through the Hansa Theater. The Savoy Film Theater has been located at Steindamm 54 since 1957.

The Steindamm is 800 m long between Steintorplatz and Lohmühlenstraße.
