Earlier this month, Silkroad Ensemble members Kevork Mourad and Wu Man traveled to Jordan for a series of storytelling workshops with Syrian refugees. We are grateful to them for welcoming us into their community and so generously sharing their stories. This video is the result of our work together, a beautiful expression of hope and optimism.

We stand together ‪#‎WithRefugees‬.

Lyrics translated from Arabic:
"Oh, my bird, I call you and tell you that I have not seen my love for whom I'm yearning.
God knows how much I long for her.
I'm yearning as well for the wind from the south."

The song, improvised by singer Muthanna Al Zeobi (seated second from left), combines a traditional song with a Syrian folk tune from Daraa, in the south of Syria. As Muthanna told Kevork in an email, "Whenever you hear about the southern wind in a song, it's about sending and receiving greetings to and from the south of Syria...[this song is] about the destruction that happened in Daraa, and how we are now rebuilding, building stories, but still deeply connected to our homeland."
