The child clung to her mother's shoulders, her small body trembling, her head resting weakly against her mother's neck. Every few seconds, a soft, raspy cough escaped her tiny chest.
The mother's arms cradled her daughter's legs, shielding her from the worst of the cold with what little fabric remained. She had given everything to her child. Her gloves. Her sweater. Even the scarf from her own neck. Now she had nothing left to give but her body heat and her will to survive.
Her name was Serena. Serena Blackwood.
