A playthrough of Sega's 1996 action game for the Sega Saturn, Mr. Bones.

Mr. Bones, released just a couple of weeks before Halloween '96, was among the many Sega Saturn exclusives that offered fresh, novel experiences that were quite unlike anything else on the market at the time. Its gameplay is difficult to pigeonhole - sometimes it's a platformer, sometimes it's a music/rhythm game, and sometimes it's just something that defies logical description. It changes up the gameplay constantly, and you'll rarely see the same style stage more than twice in a row. It's great at keeping you from getting bored, and it's pretty perfect for those of us with a major case of ADD.

As the good skeleton (you can tell since he has blue eyes and all the bad guys have red eyes), you're trying to save the world from some midgey little deformed man who, in addition to looking like he permanently lives in a Snapchat filter, is super evil and wants you destroyed.

Mr. Bones is definitely something of an oddity, and I loved it for having such distinct personality. For example, instead of a traditional life bar, if you take a whack, you lose a bone. The more body parts you lose, the harder it is to get around, but you can purposely reassemble yourself into different "configurations" that can cater your abilities to the task at hand. The abilities don't get used very often, but I thought they were a cool touch.

The graphics and sound are thoroughly excellent here, and do a great job of showing off some of the Saturn's abilities. There are tons of FMV clips, both for cutscenes and for in-game backgrounds: regularly mixing live-action video with well-produced CG clips gives the whole thing a surreal vibe, and the bluesy music (though not really my personal taste) is oddly fitting for a game so focused on death.

And how can you go wrong when you use Gulliver's Travels as the basis for some of your stages? I loved that!

The controls are generally simple, and each stage's objective is clear, but the gameplay quality does vary from level to level. The platforming stages are polished and challenging, and some of the "minigame" style stages (the guitar, the drums, and the comedy show) are fantastically entertaining. Others, like the infuriating icy lake and shadow-fight stages, will have you wanting to break the disc in half with their wonky controls and ridiculously cheap "challenges." The good outweighs the bad by a significant margin, but the flaws do hurt it to a limited extent.

Mr. Bones is a game that hails from a different time - its willingness to experiment and break formulas made it stand out, and while it doesn't always gel the way you might hope, there are some moments of real old-school gaming genius here.

If you have a Saturn, it's definitely worth a look. It's a piece of art, and it's one that's usually quite fun to play.
