Listen to the calm sounds of the Kalahari desert in the morning.

It hasn't rained in months and the Kalahari seems lifeless. At more than 40 degrees C, most wildlife is hiding from the sun and preserving energy. The soundscape is very sparse and monotonous most of the time, except for early in the morning. I wouldn't call this a proper dawn chorus because I know what this place sounds like in the rainy season. Having said that, it's more lush and lively than any other time of day. A handful of timid insects call every now and then.

The birds are spread around very thinly, but their sounds travel very far because there are no trees or hills to block them. Fortunately there is no man-made sound either, for many miles in any direction. This leaves a lot of breathing space so that hearing distance is excellent.

I walk around the sand dunes and take the sounds in, careful not to step on a snake or to startle a sleeping lion. The biophony here is very subtle, easily masked by the sounds of my footsteps and breathing. I have to stop walking for a minute and to catch my breath before I can fully appreciate how far I can hear.

I set up a recording rig in a bush, trying to capture the essence of this place. The gain has to be set for as high as possible, but even so the meters are barely moving on the screen. This is one of those recordings that is better experienced at low playback volume. If you start hearing the background noise, you need to turn it down a bit.
